Who, how, why
About
Dubstep Guide is a map of dubstep and the styles that grew out of it, from the South London producers of the early 2000s to the American festival sound and the newer internet-born scenes. Each genre gets a page with its history, the traits you can hear, the artists and labels behind it and the records that shaped it.
How the pages are made
Dates, credits and labels come from release databases such as Discogs, from label and artist pages, and from the music press that covered each scene while it was happening. The sources are listed at the bottom of every genre page. The year next to a record is the year of its first release, which is not always the year it was first played out: plenty of dubstep tunes circulated on dubplate for months before anyone could buy them.
Track titles link to a YouTube search, so the links keep working even when uploads disappear. The guide is not affiliated with any of the artists, labels or platforms mentioned.
Corrections
Genre names in bass music are argued over constantly and the edges are blurry. If a date is wrong, a credit is off or an important record is missing, please get in touch.
